Juan I Sosa a fourth-degree black belt in Shitō-ryū had trained at his dojo in Hialeah Florida for eight years. He did not observe the school’s decline from a distance. He lived it from the mat. The school he had dedicated nearly a decade of his life to had dropped to five students. Three of those students were himself and his two sons. His instructor was struggling and the school was in danger of closing.
Juan did not leave. He became a 50-50 partner with his instructor, reinvested in the school, and immediately identified the core problem. The instruction was not the issue. The systems were. As a software developer and IT professional Juan began coding what would become Black Belt Membership Software. He built automation tools for attendance, billing, and promotions because nothing on the market addressed what a martial arts school actually needed. The school grew from five students to over 150 members. The software was not a convenience. It was the reason the school survived.
Around that same time Juan connected with Rocky Catala. Rocky was a sixth-degree black belt in Goju-ryū and the owner of Miami Karate Warriors in Kendall Florida. Two school owners. The same frustrations. A conversation that became a partnership that has been growing martial arts schools around the world for over a decade.
Rocky brought what the platform needed to reach its full potential. He brought Paysafe and Worldpay into the infrastructure securing interchange plus pricing and same-day funding that gave school owners financial advantages no competitor was positioned to offer. He became the operational voice of the customer spending years in direct conversation with hundreds of school owners across the country listening to what was broken, designing features around what was actually needed, and building the growth and marketing framework that carried Black Belt Membership from two Miami dojos to schools across ten countries.
Juan built the engine. Rocky built everything that connects the engine to the real world of running a martial arts school.
Together they made a deliberate decision about the name. KarateCRM served one discipline. Black Belt Membership was built to serve all of them. The black belt is the one thing every martial arts student is working toward and the standard every instructor across every style and every discipline should already hold. That common thread belongs to every school regardless of what they teach or where they teach it.
