Boxing and kickboxing, where there is no belt to track
Most boxing gyms have no grading system, and the software written around belts fits badly. What matters here is access, attendance and how the membership is sold.
Ranks are optional, and usually off
Kickboxing programmes sometimes run a grading syllabus; most boxing programmes run none at all. Rank is a feature that can simply be switched off, so nobody is maintaining an empty belt field on every member. Where a syllabus does exist, it works exactly as it does in the graded arts.
Packs, drop-ins and unlimited on the same system
This is where boxing genuinely differs. A ten-class pack, a monthly unlimited membership, a drop-in and an open-gym rate are four different commercial products with four different rules about expiry and access, and most gyms sell all four at once. Session credits and recurring memberships run side by side here, so a member on a pack and a member on unlimited are both handled without one being faked with the other.
Attendance is the retention signal
With no grading calendar to mark progress, attendance is the only early warning you have. A member on unlimited who trained twelve times in January and three times in March has told you something, and they will usually cancel before anyone notices. Attendance trends are reportable per member, which turns that into a conversation rather than a surprise.
Questions we get asked
- Can we sell class packs that expire?
- Yes. Session credits carry their own expiry, separately from any recurring membership, and a member can hold both.
- What about open gym access outside class times?
- Open gym can be its own product with its own rate and its own attendance record, so usage is visible rather than invisible.
